RMS-11 (DEC's Keyed file structure) RMS-11 is a comprehensive set of utilities that allow a user to set up very flexible record files that both primary and alternate key structure. RMS-11 was created for users who need random access to large amounts of information. It tries to maximize the conflicting goals of fast access, easy expanda- bility, and on-line real-time access and update. The Following Utilities exist: BACKUP: Allows the user to ensure against the total loss of data due to hardware failure or software error. Creates BACKUP copies of files. CONVERT: Permits the writing of records into an indexed or relative file, the creation of a sequential file from records of another file of any organization, and the appending of records to an existing sequential file. DEFINE: Creates an RMS-11 file and defines the attributes of that file. DISPLAY: Lists the attributes of a single file or group of files. Additionally, this utility lists the names of the files found in specially formatted backup container files on magnetic tape. RESTORE: Reverses the process begun by BACKUP. Allows you to actually recreate on your system lost files. NOTE: RMS is available under most operating systems.
