System Manager's Guide to COSAP, Version 1A (31-August-73) 1. INTRODUCTION COSAP is Lawrence University's Conversationally Oriented Statistical Analysis Package. The principal author of Version 1A is Mark Williamson of the Lawrence University Computer Center staff. A detailed description of the uses of COSAP is contained in CC Publication No. EDU-300, USER'S GUIDE TO COSAP. A condensed version of that GUIDE will be found in Chapter D of the USER'S GUIDE TO THE LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY PDP 11/20 RSTS SYSTEM (Version 2). COSAP is written in BASIC-PLUS for operation under RSTS Version 4A on a PDP 11/20 with 28K of core and at least one RK05 disk drive. It makes use of certain RSTS V4A SYS functions. (For details of these functions, see the BASIC-PLUS LANGUAGE MANUAL (DEC-11-ORBPA-A-D) and the RSTS-11 SYSTEM MANAGER'S GUIDE (DEC-11-ORSMA-B-D). COSAP assumes I/O from 64-character ASCII terminals. COSAP is a non-proprietary program product of Lawrence University. It is distributed at cost for educational use, on the condition that it not be sold, rented or leased for profit. Neither the authors of COSAP nor Lawrence University assume any liability, expressed or implied, with respect to the correctness or performance of the COSAP programs. 2. PROGRAMS IN THE PACKAGE COSAP consists of this System Manager's Guide (COSAP.SMG) and the following programs and files: Group 1 --- Programs and files used in utilities and analyses Utility or Analysis Programs and files used ************************* ********************************* (All) COSAP.BAS, COSAP.DOC FINISH COSAP.BAS,COSAP2.BAS EDIT SUN.BAS, SUN2.BAS, SUN.DOC TRANSFORMATION TRAN.BAS, TRAN.DOC ELEMENTARY STATISTICS ESTA.BAS HISTOGRAM HIST.BAS T-TEST TEST.BAS RANK CORRELATION RANK.BAS CORRELATION CORR.BAS REGRESSION (SIMPLE) REGS.BAS, RESI.BAS MULTIPLE REGRESSION MRCAP.BAS, MRCAP2.BAS, MRCAP3.BAS, MRCAP4.BAS POLYNOMIAL REGRESSION POLY.BAS, RESI.BAS, FQPC.BAS STEPWISE REGRESSION STEP.BAS, RESI.BAS DISCRIMINANT ANALYSIS DISC.BAS, DFQS.BAS, DFQSD1.BAS FACTOR ANALYSIS FACO.BAS, CORE.BAS, FQCU.BAS, FQRT.BAS, FQMX.BAS, FQLD.BAS, FQS0.BAS PROBIT ANALYSIS PROB.BAS, FQEQ.BAS CANONICAL CORRELATION (*) CANO.BAS,FQSC.BAS,INVE.BAS (*) Canonical correlation is not documented in the USER'S GUIDE TO COSAP. We believe it works properly, but it has not been fully tested. We strongly recommend that all programs in Group 1 (and the files as well) be stored in the fast access portion of the RK05(s). All programs in Group 1 should be protection coded <62> and, if at all possible, stored in .BAC form. COSAP assumes that all of these Group 1 programs and files are stored in Account 100,250. COSAP sets up special extension (based on Job No.) in order to allow more than one user to be logged on under 100,250 and RUNning COSAP at the same time. (At Lawrence, we are short on user numbers and long on wanting to know how much the package is used, regardless of who uses it - at least at this time.) Group 2 --- Other programs COSAP2.BAS is actually one of the programs used in utilities and analyses, but it must be treated in a special way. It must be stored in .BAC form in Account 100,250 with a protection code of <168>. To accomplish this, compile COSAP2.BAS in Account 100,250; then log on as a privileged user and command the following: NAME "[100,250]COSAP2.BAC" AS "[100,250]COSAP2.BAC<168>" This is absolutely critical for the proper running of COSAP. CSPCVT.BAS is a program which will convert data stored in an acceptable format on disk into a COSAP DATABANK. Its use is described in Section 3 of the USER'S GUIDE TO COSAP. It should be stored in .BAC form in Account 100,250 with a protection code of <62>. CSPDEM.BAS is a program which is used to demonstrate the operation of CSPCVT.BAS; see Section 3 of the GUIDE again. It is not an integral part of COSAP, and need not be kept on disk at all. 3. PLANS FOR VERSION 2 We plan to have Version 2 of COSAP ready for release by June 1, 1974. In order to make Version 2 as useful as possible, we will be pleased to receive any reports of problems with Version 1A, and/or suggestions for additions or improvements. Please address all correspondence to: Michael A. Hall Director of Computer Services Lawrence University Appleton, Wisconsin, 54911 Telephone (414) 739-3681, Ext. 564 or 565 Our current plans for Version 2 include: Cleaning up the bugs in Version 1A (if we find tham all!) Adding ANALYSES which will do SCATTER DIAGRAMS, LINE PLOTS, ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE, and CANONICAL CORRELATION. Integrating COSAP with our version of the University of Delaware's DEPRESS system, so that the two are data-compatible (and thus adding cross-tabulation to COSAP's capabilities). (If we succeed in this, Version 2 of COSAP will not come out as such; rather, we plan to call the integrated COSAP-DEPRESS system Version 1 of CONSPIRE.) Addition of a least-squares prediction option to the MULTIPLE REGRESSION analysis, as well as another option for regression constrained thru the origin. Elimination of the requirement of equal numbers of values for all variables in a single DATABANK except as it is required for mathematical validity of the analysis. A general tightening up of the code, which now contains as much as 10% redundant material. Your suggestions will be given serious consideration too !!! ********************** End of COSAP.SMG ****************************
