They were written by the University of California (Davis) science center for use with their mailing list dBase program. (This will appear in the library real soon now). These command files were modified by myself to work with the Foghorn data base files submitted by Fred Kaufman and found on this disk and the next one. These command files are designed to work with a data base file having the name FOG.DBF. The search file submitted by Mr. Kaufman works with any file having the filename FOG?.DBF, (the ? representing a number.) Therefore, to use the add and edit command files, you must either create a DBF file with the filename FOG.DBF, or rename one of your existing ones. The reason that I elected to do it this way was an attempt to force people to copy the file they are going to add to or edit onto another disk with the appropriate filename. The idea was not to risk your existing DBF files, which represent an incredible amount of work. To use the edit and add command files, copy the DBF file you want to use onto another disk and rename the file FOG.DBF. Insert this disk into drive B. Insert dBase and the all the command files in drive A. As far as I can tell, these command files should work with any version of dBaseII. Do a at this point to be sure that your disk directories are reset properly. Load dBaseII and at the prompt type . Or, if you have renamed your dBase program DO.COM as recommended in the manual, simply type and the menu should come up. Select either the edit or add options and follow the onscreen prompting. When you are finished, rename the DBF file using the appropriate number (eg. FOG3.DBF). It might be a good idea at this point to test the file using the search option. If it tests out good, then return it to the original data disk, overwriting the existing file. One of these two disks contains the file FOGBLANK.DBF. This is a blank file ready to be used to add new data as the future issues of FOGHORN come out. When you want to add data, copy it to another disk under filename FOG.DBF. When you need to search this file, it will need to be renamed to FOG3.DBF. My suggestion would be to terminate this file at approximately 64K like the original ones are and start FOG4.DBF. While you can let your DBF files grow to the capacity of your disk space, it does slow dBase down a lot as your DBF files get larger, and a search of several smaller DBF files will be faster than a search of one large one. If you have any problems with any of these programs, please let me know. Walt Beaudry oint to test the file using the search option.
