MAPNAMES(1)              USER COMMANDS                MAPNAMES(1)

NAME
     mapnames - make symbolic links to CDROM files

SYNOPSIS
     mapnames [ -v ] cdrom_directory [ target_directory ]

DESCRIPTION
     The mapnames script creates a mapping between ISO 9660
     filenames and UNIX filenames for an NCDware CD. It is meant
     to be used on UNIX systems which support ISO 9660 file
     systems, but do not support the Rock Ridge extensions for
     UNIX-compatible file naming.

     mapnames creates a tree of symbolic links from the
     target_directory to an NCDware CD-ROM distribution,
     cdrom_directory. The symbolic links have the full UNIX
     filenames, rather than the eight-character name, three-
     character extension, and numeric version number, as
     specified in the ISO 9660. mapnames automatically detects
     ISO 9660 naming conventions for various releases of UNIX.

OPTIONS
     -v Echos the links as they are created.

EXAMPLE
     The example below shows how to link the files from a CDROM
     subdirectory to your hard disk. The CDROM is mounted on
     /cdrom.  The subdirectory is /cdrom/archives.

          $ mkdir ncdware
          $ mapnames -v /cdrom/archives ncdware

BUGS
     Because links cannot have owners or modes, mapnames cannot
     provide the ownership and mode information that is made
     available through the Rock Ridge extensions on fully
     compliant UNIX hosts.
