Selection of typefaces is done through the TYPES MENU, while size and style options are available in the CSTYLE and LSTYLE MENUS. Text is entered onscreen through the keyboard, typecase menu or disk file in the TEXT MENU. The DESIGN MENU allows you to design and edit your own characters in font libraries. Complex page layouts, scaled pages, column areas and picture positions are available through the LAYOUT MENU. Frequently used layout pages can be saved to disk and recalled through this menu. Text and images from the screen can be printed through the PRINT MENU. ~0019 The TEXT MENU is used to enter type onscreen from the keyboard, a disk file, or an onscreen typecase. Select typeface for text through the TYPES MENU. Style and size options are selected through the CSTYLE (character style) MENU. The following outline introduces the procedure of putting text onscreen: 1. Press TEXT in the FONTS MENU. 2. Press the KEYBRD command. The prompt LOC (location) appears in the Prompt Box. Position the cursor where text should begin and press down. 3. Enter text from the system keyboard , then press CR (carriage return). Text then will be drawn, appearing in the default mode: ROME regular, size 30 (characters that are 30 pixels high). 4. Press ESC on the keyboard to exit. ~0119 KEYBRD -- Enter text onscreen from the keyboard. Press KEYBRD. The prompt LOC asks for the location to place text. Press the selected point for text to start. Enter text from the keyboard. The allowing for corrections. To draw in the text, press CR (carriage return). To exit KEYBRD, press ESC on the keyboard. If the selected point is inside a layout box, text will begin at the upper left corner of the box (the lower left corner of a horizontal box). If the point pressed is outside a box, text will begin at that point. ~0219 MENU -- Enter text onscreen from the menu typecase. Press MENU. Press the starting point for text to appear. A typecase containing the selected typeface appears in place of the menu. Press AC (alternate typecase) in the Status Box to display the IBM character set to assist in the selection of characters only. Subsequent text appears in the typeface selected through the TYPES MENU. Enter text by pressing on each character. The Status Area contains commands BS (back space) and SP (space bar).To draw in the text, press CR (carriage return). Or, to draw in the text and exit the command press EX (exit). ~0319 GRKING (greeking) -- Fill an area with random or illegible text to assist in rough layout. Press GRKING, then press inside the box where subsequent text should appear. This comm and works only in a layout box or column. ~0419 FILE -- Call text to the screen from a disk file. This menu can access text from a f word processor, as long as there are no format control characters within the copy. The file must have a name of six or fewer characters and the extension .TXT (i.e. WORDS.TXT). Press FILE, then press inside the box where subsequent text should appear. The filenames menu appears. Press the name of the text file. As in the MENU command, up to 256 undisplayed characters can be held in a buffer. ~0519 LAST -- Redraw the last entered block of text after changing the style options. Use this command for viewing the same text in a different size, style or color. The text previously placed in the "LAST" location must be erased, as the redrawn copy will overwrite an image, which is then impossible to correct. To redraw the last entered block of text after changes have been made in size, style and color: Press LAST, then press inside the box or on the line where text should be redrawn. Use the PREV/OK command to redraw text in the preview mode in the LAST location. ~0619 PREV/OK -- Place subsequent text onscreen in a temporary mode. Or, draw in the characters currently onscreen in the preview mode. Press PREV. This command sets the mode alternately on or off. When the mode is on, subsequent text appears in a temporary mode. Use LAST (TEXT MENU) to reposition text in the preview mode. Press LAST. Press the location for temporary text to appear. To draw in the temporary text, press OK in the command PREV/OK. ~0719 PLACE -- Place single characters by hand. Press PLACE. The typecase appears in place of the menu. To assist in the selection of characters, press AC (alternate typecase) in the Status Box to display the IBM character set. Text will appear in the typeface selected through TYPES. Enter text by pressing on each character. A representation of the character in a box of its exact size appears on the tip of the cursor. Press down to position the character. Press EX in the typecase to exit, or press ESC. Since the cursor is on the baseline, character positioning is always accurate, even with descenders below the baseline. ~0029 The TYPES MENU displays the names of font libraries available on your system. Pressing any typeface box selects that type for all subsequent text drawn on the screen. To display the names of additional fonts available, press MORE? To display names of libraries on another disk, insert the new disk in your file disk drive (selected through the F command), then press MORE? Once a font is selected, the disk containing that library must remain in place until the character selection is complete. ~0039 The CSTYLE (character style) MENU allows selection of style options for text. Lumena uses its default font ROME, in a size of 30 dots, if no style options are chosen. Not all typefaces lend themselves well to all options. For example, the BOLD command has no effect on high resolution typefaces. A "bold effect" can be added through the extended style of the EXTND command. A bold font library can be provided for high resolution typefaces. A Character Box is displayed whenever the CSTYLE or LSTYLE MENU is onscreen. Parts of the box will spin, tilt, expand or move responding to the selected style command. The options selected are indicated onscreen in the Style Option Display. ~0139 ITALIC -- Italicize subsequent text, or cancel ITL. Press ITALIC, then press anywhere on the tablet. The Character Box tilts toward the cursor as you move the pen, showing how the characters will tilt. The degree of tilt is indicated on the Style Option Display. Press down to set the degree of tilt. To cancel italics, press ITALIC. Then press ITL in the Prompt Box. Text then appears in "regular" mode. ~0239 EXTND (extended) -- Extend or condense subsequent text, or cancel EXTND. Press EXTND, then press anywhere on the tablet. One side of the Character Box follow s the left and right moves of the cursor, showing the width as you stretch or squeeze a standard character. This amount is indicated in the Style Option Display. Press down to set the width of the character. To cancel extended, press EXTND. Then press EXT in the Prompt Box. Text then appears in "standard" width. ~0339 BOLD -- Make subsequent text appear in boldface, or cancel BOLD. Press BOLD, then press anywhere on the tablet. The Character Box contains a small rectangle that indicates the pen size used to draw characters; larger pens increase the boldface. The rectangle changes size with the movements of the pen, and the size is indicated in the Style Option Display. Press down to set the width of boldface. To cancel boldface, press BOLD. Then press BLD in the Prompt Box. Text then appears in "medium" width. Use EXTND to add a "bold" effect to high-resolution typefaces. ~0439 SIZE -- Select the size for subsequent text. Press SIZE, then press anywhere on the tablet. The Character Box changes size, increasing and decreasing with the left and right moves of the pen. The size is displayed onscreen. Press down to set the desired size which is then indicated in the Style Option Display. Press SIZ in the Prompt Box to select the default, size 30. Size is usually measured in pixels, or dots on the screen. Within scaled page layouts (see LAYOUT MENU), Lumena attempts to scale characters to typographical "points" instead of pixels. ~0539 LOCATE -- Select the layout box to be affected by subsequent style commands. Press LOCATE. All layout boxes appear as well as the prompt LOC. Press inside the box where the style characteristics are to be changed. Pressing in the Prompt Box chooses the entire screen as the location. Subsequent text in each box, page, or column has its own typeface, size, color and style values. If the layout contains several boxes, use LOCATE in each box before changing the characteristics. This command displays the current layout box to be affected by subsequent style commands. ~0639 EDGE/O -- (edges/outside edges) Select smooth, anti-aliased characters; or cancel EDGE/O. To select smooth inside edges, press EDGE. The prompt EDG appears. To select smooth outside edges, press O. The prompt OUT appears. Press anywhere onscreen to confirm selection. Subsequent characters appear with edges blended into the background, when EDGE is selected. OR, press in the Prompt Box to cancel. In the O option, the character edges are blended into the colored area of a character. The O option can fade small characters, almost to the point of invisibility. For detailed information on smooth edges, refer to the EDGES MENU. ~0739 OUTLIN -- Add outline detail to subsequent text characters, or cancel OUTLIN. Use OVR/UN (CSTYLE MENU) OVR for "overwrite" or UN for "underwrite" outlines. The default mode is "OVR." Press OUTLIN. The Prompt OUT appe the Character Box. Glide the pen back and forth. The Outline Box expands and decreases by four increments to display the depth of the outline. Press the pen to select the desired outline. The prompt 1C (1 color) allows a color selection for the outline. To cancel outlining, press OUTLIN. Then press OUT in the Prompt Box. ~0839 SHAD/S -- Add a drop or block shadow to subsequent text, or cancel SHAD/S. Use OVR/UN (CSTYLE MENU)- OVR to select "overwrite" shadows, or UN for "underwrite" shadows. To select a single drop shadow, press SHAD. Or, press S to select a solid block shadow. The Shadow Box appears and follows the left to right moves of the pen. Press down to select the distance and direction of the shadow. The prompt 1C (1 color) appears, allowing a color selection for the shadow. Subsequent text casts a drop shadow (displayed as separate from the character), or a block shadow (displayed as an extension of the character). To cancel shadows, press SHAD or S. Then press SHD in the Prompt Box. ~0939 OVR/UN -- Change the characteristics of shadows and outlines. Press OVR to select "overwrite" shadows and outlines. Or press UN to select "underwrite" shadows and outlines. If this command is not used, shadows and outlines will appear in the d efault mode OVR. In the overwrite mode, shadows and outlines are cast over the background behind the character. This can result in overwriting parts of the surrounding characters. Thus, a character may appear to be "on top of" a previous one. In the underwrite m will cast only on background color, with no effect on surrounding characters. Outlines and shadows will merge, and characters will appear to be on the same plane. ~0049 The LSTYLE (line style) MENU allows the selection of options specific to the lines of text. Character spacing, text leading (line spacing), the baseline (starting point) and angle for text can all be determined in this menu. Also, the proportions of text characters can be manipulated to meet the aspect ratio of your screen. It is imporatant to remember that ZAP cannot be used in the LSTYLE MENU ( or the CSTYLE or LAYOUT MENUS, either), as it will confuse the Character Box. If it is necessary to clear the screen, be sure to relocate to the FONTS MENU before using ZAP. ~0149 SPACE -- Adjust the amount of space between characters, or cancel the adjusted space. Press SPACE, then press anywhere on the tablet. The Character Spacing Indicator to the right of the Character Box moves to indicate the width of space between characters. Glide the pen to the right to increase space, and to the left to decrease the space. The distance between the Box and the Indicator represents the width of space between characters, and it is indicated on the Style Option Display on the bottom of the screen. Press down to set the amount of space between characters. To cancel space, press SPACE. Then press SPC in the Prompt Box. To decrease space, the Spacing Indicator appears inside the Character Box and the characters will overwrite. ~0249 ANGLE -- Manipulate the angle of subsequent text. Press ANGLE, then the tablet. The Character Box tilts on its lower left corner moving clockwise as you glide the pen left, and counterclockwise as you glide right. The degree of the angle appears in the Style Option Display. Press down to set the degree of the angle. To cancel the angle, press ANGLE. Then press ANG in the Prompt Box. The ANGLE command tilts only the characters, without tilting the lines of text. Use the BASLIN command in the LSTYLE MENU to change the angle of a line of text. ~0349 JUSTFY -- Change the justification of text within a layout box or column. Press JUSTFY. The prompt JUS appears. To justify, or align, the text on the left or right, press the pen in the left or right side of the box. To center each line of text, press in the center of the box. Press JUS in the Prompt Box to select text that is justified left and right. ~0449 ASPECT -- Adjust the proportions of text characters to meet the aspect ratio of your screen. Press ASPECT, then press anywhere on the tablet and move the pen left or right. A temporary diamond-shaped box appears, changing proportions as you move the pen. When the diamond resembles a square standing on its corner, the aspect is correct. Press down to set the correct aspect. The default aspect ratio has been set to meet the standards of the most commonly used monitors. Since many monitors differ in aspect rations, the ASPECT command allows you to adjust the proportions of text characters to meet the aspect ratio of your screen. If you require an adjusted aspect ratio, be sure to reset the ratio each ~0549 LOCATE -- Select the layout box to be affected by subsequent style commands. Press LOCATE. All the layout boxes appear, as well as the prompt LOC. Press inside the box where style options are to be changed. Pressing inside the Prompt Box chooses the entire screen as the location. This command selects only one layout box at a time to be affected by subsequent style commands. If the layout includes several boxes, use the LOCATE command in one box, make the necessary style changes, then proceed to the next box. Repeat the action with each box as required. ~0649 LSPACE -- Adjust the amount of space allowed between lines of text; or cancel the adjusted space. Press LSPACE, then press anywhere on the tablet. The Leading Indicator moves below the Character Box to show the amo unt of space between lines (leading). This appears in the Style Option Display. Gliding the pen to the right increases the leading, and decreases with moves to the left. Press down to set the required amount of space between lines. The default spacing is 1 1/2 times the height of the Character Box. To cancel adjusted space, press LSPACE. Then press LED in the Prompt Box. ~0749 BASLIN -- Adjust the starting point and baseline angle for subsequent text; or cancel BASLIN. Press BASLIN, then press anywhere on the tablet. A temporary rubberband baseline appears and follows the moves of the pen. The angle is indicated in to set the baseline direction and angle.
