This allows you to learn them easily and use them during text creation without hindering the flow of text entry. Furthermore, .bo MAT uses few commands while still allowing full manipulation of the major structural features that typify a well formatted document. .sp Each .bo MAT command consists of a line beginning with a dot, followed by two letters characterizing a particular operation. hence, .sp .bp beans "begin page" .sp means "space" .fi means "fill in" .sp Some commands have an optional value associated with them which specifies the magnitude of effect, or sets ranges, for the command. The result is that words are never hyphenated at the right hand margin. This means, of course, that when you're entering text, you don't want to fill each CRT line all the way to the end and then hyphenate a word, as you might on a typewriter. All margins are figured from the left hand side of the page, and the relevant general commands (.in, .rm) have optional values associated with them which allow you to specify values for margin length. If an optional value isn't specified, or if the command is omitted entiely, then .bo MAT will assume the default values. Without specifying values, therefore, each line will be 65 characters in length. .sp .in +10 .rm -10 Now imagine that you had a long quotaton to insert within a text, as we are doing here. I have changed the left margin from its original value (10) to 20, using the command .in +10. This means that .bo MAT has begun setting subsequent lines ten spaces further into the page from the original margin. I also changed the right margin from its original value (75) to 65, using the command .rm -10. Header text is left justified on the page. In order to achieve centering, you must fill in the appropriate number of blanks before the header text. However, since the formatted header begins with the first non-blank of the line, a double quote mark must be inserted between the command and the beginning of the blanks. Thus, to center our previous example, we would need to use the command .sp .he " MAT TUTORIAL .sp Keeping track of page numbers, and printing them in headers or footers is readily done, since .bo MAT automatically keeps a page count. When .bo MAT encounters the symbol "#" in a header or footer, the symbol is replaced with the current page number. However, it also causes an indent equal to the number of blanks inserted at the start of the line. .sp .bo MAT offers another command, .ti (temporary indent), which allows you to make temporary indentations. The only line affected is the line immediately following the command. .sp Earlier, we had said that indent commands can use relative values. This is true of the .ti command as well. Thus, to create an indent of five spaces, you could say .sp .ti +5 .sp which would cause five blank spaces at the beginning of the line following the command. If, on the other hand, we wanted to cause an extension of the line to the left of the normal margin (outdent?), we could enter .sp .ti -5 .sp which would cause the line to shift five spaces to the left of the margin.
